New six-cylinder in-line engine with maximum performance.

The most powerful straight six-cylinder petrol engine ever used in a BMW M car provides the muscles for breathtaking performance. The newly developed high-speed unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology generates a maximum output of 353 kW / 480 PS with a maximum torque of 600 Nm from its 3.0-liter displacement. The version of the bi-turbo engine specially developed for the BMW X3 M Competition and the BMW X4 M Competition increases the output by 22 kW / 30 PS to 375 kW / 510 PS.

Flawless power distribution: M xDrive, Active M Differential.

The new high-performance engine works with an eight-speed M-Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and uses the new M xDrive all-wheel drive system, which was first introduced in the BMW M5, to direct its power onto the road. The M xDrive system has a rear wheel preload and offers owners of the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M two AWD driving modes. The centrally controlled interaction between M xDrive and the Active M differential on the rear axle enables the all-wheel drive system to distribute the engine power to the four wheels as required in order to achieve optimum traction, agility and directional stability. The BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M both sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds, while their competition variants reached 100 km / h in just 4.1 seconds.

The M-specific chassis technology offers excellent dynamics.

The combination of dynamism and precision for which BMW M vehicles are known is underpinned by model-specific body reinforcement elements and sophisticated chassis technology that is matched to the performance of the engine. With three settings that can be selected at the push of a button, the electronically controlled dampers of the M-specific chassis enable both excellent everyday comfort and extremely direct contact with the road with low wheel and body movements. The tailor-made kinematics and elastokinematics of the M-specific chassis – with its double-joint strut front axle and the five-link rear axle – provide precise wheel position and directional stability. The chassis technology package is rounded off by M-specific steering behavior (including M Servotronic and variable gear ratio) and powerful M compound brakes. Among the other items on the standard specification list are 20-inch M alloy wheels.

As with the damper control systems and the M xDrive modes, the engine and transmission properties as well as the steering setup can be adjusted at the push of a button. The DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system enables controlled wheel slip in M Dynamic Mode and can of course also be switched off. In addition, the content shown in the optional head-up display can be set via the iDrive menu. The driver can save two general setting options in the iDrive menu, which have been configured as required using the above parameters, and select them if necessary using the two M buttons on the steering wheel.

Signature M design elements for outside and inside.

M-specific design features optimize the cooling air supply for the BMW X3 M, BMW X4 M and Competition models as well as their aerodynamics. The electrically adjustable sports seats, leather upholstery by Vernasca, the M-specific cockpit, the leather steering wheel M and the gear lever M create a sporty and luxurious ambience.

The BMW X3 M Competition and the BMW X4 M Competition add further exclusive highlights to the exterior: high-gloss black for the BMW kidney grille, exterior mirror caps and M-gills as well as the rear spoiler of the Sports Activity Coupé. The standard equipment also includes 21-inch M light-alloy wheels in polished black and an M-Sport exhaust system. The expressive charisma of the interior is enhanced by M sport seats with extended merino leather upholstery, model-specific door sills and a model plate on the center console. The options for the Competition models include special two-tone leather upholstery variants with Alcantara applications.

The optional M carbon exterior package (expected to be available from August 2019) with design elements made of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) for the front air inlets, the air scoops in the front apron, the rear diffuser and the exterior mirror caps adds further individual flourishes. In the BMW X4 M and BMW X4 M Competition, these elements are supplemented by a CFRP rear spoiler.
