Casey Stoner says that MotoGP was emulated too much in the direction of F1 with aerodynamic aids and winglets, which he describes as a “monstrosity”, especially with the Ducati.

The two-time MotoGP world champion cited the direction the sport took in 2007 to return to an 800cc formula and the introduction of the production-based Open / Claiming Rules Team (CRT) as reasons for his decision to abandon the sport after a relative give up short career.

Since then, MotoGP has increased performance and reduced lap times with the constant further development of the machines, with the use of wing elements being one of the most important.

While MotoGP has toyed with regulating the concepts, manufacturers have regularly introduced innovations around the rules. As such, all the motorcycles on the grid have germinated winglets, some – like the Ducati with its distinctive GP21 – more noticeable in their approach.

It’s an approach Stoner doesn’t appreciate as he says he’s too close to the series and trying to be like F1.

“I still don’t like the direction MotoGP is taking,” he told Australian Motor Cycle News. “I want the purity to return instead of the electronics controlling the motorcycles on the gas and the winglets controlling the front end. All bikes are basically clones of each other, that’s why they run so close to each other. “

“It’s a monstrosity, this bike. I would like to change some of the regulations to tear off half the stuff that is on MotoGP motorcycles. MotoGP doesn’t need wings and everything – it seems to be heading in the direction of F1. “

Stoner, who won 28 MotoGP events in 115 starts, was notoriously shy of the media and the attention that his success brought during his time in MotoGP. an antithesis to Valentino Rossi’s more showman approach.

However, he was one of many to praise his former rival on the track when The Doctor announced that he would retire from motorcycle racing towards the end of the season.

“You were without a doubt one of my greatest rivals, my performances were all the more confirmed when I raced against you.

“We’ve had some tough fights over the years and I’ve learned a lot from you. I hope you enjoy the next chapter of your life, there is still a lot to enjoy. “
