Jake Dixon retains SRT MotoGP seat for Aragon GP

Dixon made his MotoGP debut at the British GP last weekend as a replacement for the injured Franco Morbidelli on SRT’s A-Spec Yamaha.

Yamaha test rider Cal Crutchlow had stepped in for the Austrian one-two, but Maverick Vinales’ ousting from the Yamaha factory team forced the brand to call in Crutchlow to replace the Spaniard.

Dixon had tire problems at the Silverstone race and was the last runner to finish in 19th place.

His Moto2 teammate Xavi Vierge was offered the SRT M1 for the Aragon lap, but declined the offer because he felt it would do more harm than good to his career prospects.

As a result, Dixon was offered the Yamaha for a second weekend.

Former SRT Moto3 rider Adam Norrodin has taken over Dixon’s Moto2 seat at Silverstone, but the team will give Scottish McPhee the opportunity to make his intermediate class debut in Aragon.

FIM CEV Junior Moto3 World Championship rider Syarifuddin Azman will make his Grand Prix debut for McPhee in Aragon.

“The current dynamic status of the team offers our drivers and new talents some exciting opportunities,” said team principal Razlan Razali.

“We were pleased with Jake’s MotoGP debut at the UK Grand Prix and would like to give him the opportunity to continue his learning in the MotoGP class in Aragon.

“That of course leaves a place in his place in Moto2 that we wanted to give John, who will be making his Moto2 debut.

“Subsequently, this offers a perfect platform for us to lend Syarifuddin Azman from FIM CEV his seat.

“Azman won a FIM CEV run in Barcelona and I think it’s a great opportunity for him to gain experience to determine his level in the Moto3 World Championship.

“We are excited about the prospect of giving our young drivers a chance and wish them all the best.”

Last weekend, SRT announced that it would completely discontinue MotoGP at the end of 2021. For 2022, a new unit under the direction of the current management Razali and Johan Stigefelt is to be presented at the San Marino GP.

Andrea Dovizioso will make his MotoGP return with SRT at Misano instead of the factory Yamaha-tied Morbidelli.
