Augusto Fernandez a été le plus rapide lors de la première séance d’essais libres de la katégorie Moto2 du Grand Prix de Malaysia, 19e étape du Championnat du monde 2022 prévue dimanche à Sepang. Le pilote de l’équipe Red Bull Ajo, fraîchement sorti de son accident à Phillip Island, a arrêté le chrono avec un temps de 2’06.816, devançant son coéquipier Pedro Acosta de près d’une seconde.
Le troisième temps est pour Tony Arbolino (Marc VDS), juste devant le leader du classement mondial Ai Ogura (Team Asia). Le pilote japonais devance Albert Arenas (Aspar) et son coéquipier Somkiat Chantra. Jake Dixon (Aspar) est septieme, devant Fermin Aldeguer (Speed Up) et Aaron Canetmalgre une chute qui a également impliqué Barry Baltosce dernier endolori à la jambe a été évacué sur une civière.
Cloture du Top Ten Celestino Vietti (Mooney VR46 Racing Team), qui en debut de séance a été victime d’un problem particulier: une crevaison du pneu arrière. Qualifications for the Q2 provisional également: Jeremy Alcoba (Intact GP), Philip Salac (Gresini), Lorenzo Dalla Porta (Italtrans) et Marcel Schrotter (Intact GP). Le vainqueur de Phillip Island Alonso Lopez est 15e, a été victime d’une chute sans conséquences mais elle lui a coûté un temps précieux.
