Yamaha “struggles more than usual” in qualifying

Quartararo has an incredible qualifying record in 2021, scored five poles and placed his M1 on the front row of the grid in all but one race.

He finished third again at Misano after qualifying in the same position at Silverstone and Aragon. His last front row came despite a late fall on the first corner.

Quartararo is surrounded by Ducatis at the top of the Misano grid, with Francesco Bagnaia and Jack Miller in first and second and the Pramac duo of Jorge Martin and Johann Zarco in fourth and fifth.

In terms of the volume of Ducatis at the top of the field compared to Yamaha motorcycles, with the second best M1 Franco Morbidelli in 16th place, Quartararo said: “I’m right in the middle of four Ducatis.

“So of course it’s not the best. It would be great to have a couple of the blue bikes up front, but I hope Franco will soon recover well and be on top because we are fighting a lot more in qualifying than usual.

“And I tried to give Yamaha some great information for what I see today, it’s pretty interesting. It’s not that easy. “

Quartararo says his crash at the end of qualifying was simply due to braking too late at Turn 1, but was happy to have found the front tire limit before the race.

“I did fourth qualifying at this track in MotoGP and I’m third every time, so I think we did a great job,” he added.

“On the last lap I tried a little too hard in the first corner.

“We checked the data and I braked way too late, but that’s what I wanted to do and it was great to feel that limit up front.

“So happy with the pace I had in FP4, we made a small change to the bike in the second run and I am improving with used tires. So I’m looking forward to trying out this setup with the new tire. “

The forecast for Sunday remains unclear as Quartararo admits he wants a dry race after finishing 18th in a wet FP2 on Friday.

Quartararo initially joked that his current form means he will be without points in a wet race.

“We have a lot of things to try and in any case I will give 100% when it is wet because if we are wet we now have, I think, zero points,” he said.

“When it’s wet, I give 100%, in dry conditions I give 100%.”

He later added, “I wanted to say the position we were in FP2 was 18th so there are no points [if it was the race].

“And I mean we have to take a step, that’s why I say I have to give 100%.

“We’ll see what happens when it rains. So I don’t have to be conservative when it’s wet. ”
