Spanish oil giant Repsol has confirmed a two-year extension of its title sponsorship deal with the Honda MotoGP team.

The collaboration is probably one of the best-known and best-known partnerships in motorsport and will now also be continued in the 2021 and 2022 campaigns.

Today’s confirmation of the new deal puts an end to rumors of a possible split. It has been suggested that HRC and Red Bull would be looking into a possible deal where the energy drink company would have taken on the factory team’s title sponsors.

“It’s always a great feeling to extend our partnership with Repsol for another two years this time,” said HRC President Yoshishige Nomura. “Together we achieved unbelievable success and entered into a partnership that is unique in motorsport.

“We are working and will continue to work to overcome all obstacles and hardships that are presented to us. 2020 has been a difficult year for the world, but together with Repsol we have continued to work towards our goals. We are now looking forward to to continue this journey together and to write many more pages in the history of Grand Prix racing. “

Repsol’s orange, red and white (plus black on a par) has covered Honda factory motorcycles since 1995. During that time, the Repsol Honda team has secured 15 rider titles, some of which are the biggest names in the sport – Mick Doohan (4), Alex Criville (1), Valentino Rossi (2), Nick Hayden (1), Casey Stoner ( 1) and Marc Marquez (6).

The collaboration between Repsol and Honda has resulted in 10 team championships since the award was made in 2002. The partnership has recorded a total of 180 victories and 447 podiums in 500cc and MotoGP.

The 2020 season was not as memorable for the partnership as in previous years. The reigning champion Marc Marquez had to exclude himself due to an injury after a broken arm in the first lap in Jerez.

Alex Marquez, Marc’s younger brother and Moto3 and Moto2 champion, has achieved the team’s only podiums in the last two races. He finished third in the wet French Grand Prix before crossing the line in second at the Aragon GP last weekend.

The 2021 Repsol Honda Team consists of Marc Marquez and Pol Espargaro, with Alex Marquez joining the LCR Honda Team.
