Rins “doesn’t understand” why Vinales didn’t retire

Vinales brought out the red flag in Sunday’s Red Bull Ring race when he was forced to jump off his Yamaha at 130 mph when the brakes failed. The bike shot into the air fence and went up in flames.

The Yamaha rider was caught on camera and raised a hand to signal that he had a problem with his bike. He later stated that the problem with his brakes occurred intermittently before they “exploded”.

Rins believes Vinales’ problem may be due to not using the new Brembo brake pads and calipers that were brought in for the second Red Bull Ring race after numerous overheating problems with brakes at the Austrian GP.

But the Suzuki driver says Vinales, who is struggling with his brakes, will likely be discussed at the next meeting of the safety commission.

“The problem that Maverick had, if I’m not mistaken, is that all drivers had very hot brake pads and brake calipers in the last race,” said Rins after finishing sixth at the Styrian GP.

“Brembo brought bigger ones for this race. The only ones who didn’t install these new brake pads were [Joan] Me and Maverick who used the conventional ones that are smaller.

“But if Maverick had known for a few laps that he’d run out of brakes and raised his hand as a result, he would normally have pitted earlier. I don’t understand why he had to keep going in the race.

“We will certainly discuss it at the next meeting of the security commission.”

Yamaha riders struggled with braking problems during the various sessions of the two Red Bull Ring race weekends.

Vinales was not convinced that the type of route was the main cause of the problem. Valentino Rossi noted that Yamaha’s lack of power is forcing them to put the brakes on harder to recover.

“This track is braked very hard and everyone suffers,” explained Rossi.

“If you see, everyone has large air ducts on the brakes, including the other manufacturers.

“But it looks like the Yamaha is suffering more, also because we try to gain on braking what we lose on the straights because our bike is slow but brakes well.

“So we try to brake very hard and we put a lot of strain on the brakes. This is why Yamaha suffers from this problem more. “
