All new Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP presented at EICMA; Finally join the 200PS Superbike Club

  • The Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade has an output of 217.5 hp and 113 Nm.
  • Receives MotoGP-inspired body with aero winglets; weighs only 201kg.
  • Fireblade SP receives semi-active Ohlins suspension and Brembo Stylema four-piston radial brake callipers.

Honda finally entered the 200PS Club and how! The brand new 2020 CBR1000RR-R Fireblade is a massive upgrade compared to Honda’s current generation of the liter class superbike. On the one hand, it gets a focused styling that is derived directly from HRC’s MotoGP manual. The additional R in its name screams for pure racing focus, as does the massive air inlet between the sharp LED headlights and the stacked aero winglets on the sides. Yes, the 2020 Fireblade is all about aerodynamics! Even the fuel tank is 45 mm lower, so that the driver can hide completely behind the windshield. Overall, the new Fireblade looks even more compact than the outgoing model, but is far more targeted.

Fun fact: the new CBR gets keyless ignition. This means that no physical firing cylinder is obstructing the flow of air from the central air inlet to the airbox.

The new 999.9 cc inline 4 engine shares the same bore and stroke as the RC213V-S, giving it a more over-square configuration than before. It uses exotic materials to keep weight and centrifugal forces down, and allows the motor to spin faster. The resulting power is a massive 217.5 hp at 14,500 rpm and 113 Nm of torque at 12,500 rpm.Considering the fact that the bike now only weighs 201 kg (curb), expect quite an explosive performance.

This low weight was achieved through the use of an aluminum frame and the monoshock was mounted directly on the rear of the engine, eliminating the need for a rear cross member. Not only are Honda engineers lightweight, they have also focused on making the driver feel better about driving. The frame is 11 percent less stiff for more flexibility and feel, while the new and longer swing arm is more stable but offers more feel when bending. Even the rear tire is a larger radial unit with 200 sections to improve the contact area and provide better traction. While the regular CBR1000RR-R Fireblade Showa gets Big Piston forks and Big Piston monoshock, the hotter SP version comes with a semi-active Ohlins landing gear. Both motorcycles have larger 330 mm double discs at the front. While the regular CBR receives Nissin monoblocks, the SP variant receives Brembo Stylema brake calipers.

The electronics have also received a massive boost, as the previous five-axis IMU has been replaced by a six-axis unit. So you get a nine-stage traction control system and cornering ABS. By default, it is also given start control. All electronics can be accessed via a 5-inch color TFT screen, which has a new graphical interface.
