Alex Marquez is recovering for the virtual home podium

There were a few falls in another dramatic race, but Alex Marquez again showed his consistency to continue his perfect podium record and Marc Marquez took an important fourth place.

Quickly adapting to the new MotoGP 2020 video game, Alex Marquez started in the middle of the front row for the Red Bull Virtual 13-lap GP in Spain. Teammate Marc Marquez was lower than usual in the third row. Both were confident at their pace when the lights went out in the third virtual race of the year.

Turn One was a mess as the riders dived and dived, but a great start aboard the RC213V resulted in Alex leading from the first corner. He and Francesco Bagnaia mostly made it on the first lap, until an unusual mistake by Alex at Turn 10 caused the Moto2 World Champion to slip. Alex quickly got back in, charged forward, and made his way through the field. The MotoGP rookie was runner-up on lap four – which is where he would eventually finish the race when a second crash ended his chance of winning. The result leads Alex to become joint leader of the championship.

Marc Marquez was able to make up several positions off the line and was immediately in and under the top 5. With Alex’s fall, Marc fought for the podium again and spent the following laps fighting Viñales. The couple was soon joined by Marc’s team-mate from the Repsol Honda team, and the reigning world champion was looking for an opening. Late antics with Petrucci resulted in Marquez dropping to fourth place, scoring strong points for the championship.

The Repsol Honda Team left their home lap with another podium and a double top 5 result and are happy with the opening laps of the virtual season.
