Perfect end of 2019 for the Triple Crown winning Repsol Honda team as Lorenzo says goodbye

Jorge Lorenzo ended an incredible 18-year Grand Prix career with an emotional race in Valencia, helping the Repsol Honda Team claim the Triple Crown alongside another dominating Marquez win.

For the third year in a row, the Repsol Honda Team celebrates the end of a MotoGP season with the Triple Crown after winning the Drivers, Team and Constructors’ competitions. The achievement concludes an incredible year of records and achievements as Honda celebrates its 60th anniversary.

Marquez was doing quick work with the drivers in front of him when the lights went out in the final race of 2019 and moved up to second on lap three. With only Fabio Quartararo in front of him, Marquez methodically shortened the gap from almost one second to just two tenths in five laps. At Turn 11, Marquez only needed one chance to move forward and quickly gained an insurmountable lead.

A twelfth win marks Marquez ‘2019 season in perfect style and matches the number of wins he has in his dominant 2014 season. With 420 points in the 19 races of 2019, Marquez is the first driver in history to score more than 400 points in a single season. With his 95th podium in the premier class, he is on par with Mick Doohan as the second most productive Honda podium finisher in the premier class.

After 297 Grand Prix starts, Jorge Lorenzo marked the end of his legendary MotoGP World Championship career with his best result since returning from injury. The five-time world champion said goodbye to Grand Prix races with a 13th place in front of an enthusiastic Spanish audience. With 68 wins, 152 podiums and 69 poles, Lorenzo leans forward with some of the most impressive stats on his name in Grand Prix history.

This is the ninth Triple Crown of the Repsol Honda Team since the MotoGP class began in 2002 and cemented it as the most dominant team and constructor in the premier class. For the first time in the four-stroke era, the team managed to win three Triple Crowns in a row.

The drivers will be back on track at Circuit Ricardo Tormo on Tuesday November 19 for the first test of 2020 before moving to Jerez a few days later.
