David Muñoz takes first cup win in Valencia thriller 2

David Muñoz risked his first victory in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup after a gigantic 10-man battle. Iván Ortolá was just 0.040 seconds behind and David Salvador finished third for an all-Spanish podium.

It was dramatic from start to finish when Pole man Daniel Holgado fell out of the lead early, David Muñoz missed, but Cup Champion Pedro Acosta went down.

Those three looked like they could pull away, but after that no one got a clear advantage and anyone in the top 10 could have won in the final round.

David Muñoz with the perfect drive out of the rough

“I really enjoyed the fight with my buddies,” said the 14-year-old. “It was difficult, the track was slippery, but it was the same for everyone and I kept pushing. I had a great run through the last corner to get the win just before the finish line. “

“The bike was really good and tomorrow it will be difficult again, but the race is a little earlier and the weather forecast is warmer, so I hope the track offers more grip.”

Ortolá just couldn’t hold out

“I’m very satisfied with that,” enthuses the 16-year-old. “I didn’t have a good start, but I caught up lap after lap and was able to fight for victory in the last few laps. I took the lead and closed the door as best I could defend, but I didn’t make the last corner perfectly and David overtook me on the way to the checkered flag. “

“I am happy that I moved up to second place in the championship and I hope that I will do well tomorrow. The bike was really great, much better than last weekend when we didn’t have dry training to sort that out. This weekend we created a great backdrop. “

Salvador came back perfectly

“I’m really happy for this race because I was very angry after yesterday’s long lap penalty,” said the 16-year-old. “I just didn’t see the red flag.”

“So I drove the long lap at the beginning of the race, figured out exactly how I was going to do it and it went perfectly, so that I could catch up again and take the lead quite quickly.”

“The pace was very good and I really enjoyed it. It was a great fight with David and Ortolá, so many overtaking maneuvers and an incredible fight with these drivers. “

Marcos Uriarte right next to the podium

“I felt very comfortable on the bike this weekend,” said the 15-year-old Spaniard. “Yesterday I fell in qualifying, the first lap after the red flag stop, so I was only 14th on the grid . “

“Today I pushed so hard, but I just missed the podium. The bike was amazing today, I really enjoyed it, so I hope I can get even better tomorrow. “

Mario Aji again quickly

“I’m not satisfied with the result, but I really enjoyed the race, lots of fights,” enthused the 16-year-old Indonesian. “Maybe in 1 lap, 5 changes of position. It was crazy and I enjoyed it a lot. I made a mistake on the penultimate lap and a lot of people passed so I was a little behind. Up until then my bike was sliding around a lot, I know the other riders said the same thing, but I had a difficult feeling with the rear tire over the last few laps. “

“That’s racing, that’s it, and tomorrow I’ll try to be on the podium. Maybe we’ll make the rear of the bike a little harder, we’ll talk about it. “

Pedro Acosta picked up the fallen bike and turned 14.

“Yesterday in qualifying I had a fall and injured my wrist a bit, so I preferred to take it a little slower in the first few laps,” said the 16-year-old Spaniard, who won the cup last weekend. “But then Holgado fell, Muñoz (David) braked a little and I touched Muñoz and fell. Nothing to say, this is racing and Dani certainly didn’t want to fall. “

“Tomorrow we will see the last race.”
