Pramac rider Jorge Martin from Mugello MotoGP run

Martin suffered multiple fractures in a serious fall while training for the Portuguese Grand Prix last month in Portimao, which required surgery.

The MotoGP rookie therefore had to miss his home race at Jerez and last weekend’s French GP at Le Mans, with 2014 Moto2 World Champion and former Avintia Ducati rider Tito Rabat taking his place.

Rabat’s World Superbike commitments at Barni Racing this coming weekend in Estoril prevent him from riding the Pramac Ducati at Mugello, with the team claiming Ducati test rider Pirro.

Pramac expects Martin to return to the Catalonia Grand Prix in Barcelona the following week.

A brief statement from Pramac stated: “After listening to the doctors’ opinions and reflections, Jorge Martin will be back in time for the Catalan Grand Prix.

“The Spaniard’s conditions are undoubtedly improving, but it doesn’t seem like the best choice for him to return to Mugello in time as this track is so tough and demanding.

“That is why Michele Pirro (Ducati test driver) will wear the Pramac Racing colors with Johann Zarco at the Italian Grand Prix.”

Rabat finished 18th in his first race on the factory Ducati in Jerez before taking a point from flag to flag at the French GP last weekend.

Martin had an excellent start to his MotoGP career early in the season in Qatar, where he qualified from pole position for round two of the Doha GP campaign.

The young Spaniard led the race for the first 17 laps and finally crossed the finish line for his first podium in third in his second race.

Pirro often has wildcard appearances for Ducati in Mugello and recently ran some private days of testing for the brand at the Italian GP venue.

The Italian was unable to make wildcard starts in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, but instead of the injured Francesco Bagnaia in the Pramac he was drafted for the Austrian double header – and achieved a best result of 12th GP.

Pirro finished seventh as a Ducati wildcard on his last visit to Mugello in 2019.
