Honda MotoGP team rejects new rumors about Marquez’s operation

Marquez broke his right arm in a serious fall at the season opening Grand Prix of Spain in Jerez in July.

He attempted a comeback the following week at the Andalusia GP just days after the operation, but retired after qualifying when he suffered from further arm swelling and lack of strength.

Marquez then needed a second operation when the plate broke on his right arm when he allegedly opened a door in his home after being weakened by his attempt at comeback.

In August, Honda confirmed that he would be out of action until at least the end of October, though he will now return to the November European Grand Prix at the earliest, if at all.

Reports in the Spanish press on Wednesday said Marquez could face a third operation, but Honda has since discarded it.

An HRC spokesman said in a statement: “The Repsol Honda Team would like to confirm that Marc Marquez’s recovery is proceeding as planned.

“Although it’s been a long and intense recovery, Marc and his team have nothing to worry about.”

A picture posted on Marquez’s social media accounts just moments before the statement was posted showed him doing weight training, which further defends claims of an impending third surgery.

Due to his absence from the Aragon GP last weekend, Marquez was mathematically eliminated from the title race, meaning 2020 will only be the second season after 2015 since he was promoted to MotoGP in 2013.

His rookie brother Alex took his first MotoGP podium two weeks ago at the wet French GP at Le Mans and underpinned this with a race to catch up from eleventh place in the dry Aragon race.

Those podiums marked Honda’s first of a largely difficult 2020 campaign, with HRC’s Takaaki Nakagami currently being HRC’s best runner and best motorcycle championship hope of 2019, 29 points off the lead in sixth place.

Honda test driver Stefan Bradl has been representing Marc Marquez since the Czech GP and will do so again this weekend at the Teruel GP.
