MotoGP runner-up would have been “a dream come true”

Rins is four points ahead of Valencia Grand Prix winner Franco Morbidelli in the battle for second place in the overall standings, with six drivers aiming to mathematically secure second place in the Portugal final this weekend.

The Suzuki rider says second place would be “super nice” for him and the team but is wary of the threat Yamaha poses with Morbidelli, Maverick Vinales and Fabio Quartararo within 17 points of Rins.

“It would be nice to finish in second place, it’s a dream come true,” said Rins.

“For me, for the team, it’s super nice.

“Two or three more drivers. And they are all Yamahas. I think all of these riders are strong because the Yamaha is doing pretty well.

“You qualify well. Morbidelli did a very good job last race, also in Aragon. We definitely give our 100%. “

Rins admits that there were talks between Suzuki and Mir about a possible scenario of team orders in Sunday’s race, with the world champion happy to help his teammate secure second place in the overall standings if he can.

“[Wednesday] at dinner we had a chat with Joan, with Davide [Brivio] and Joan surely said if there was something he could do to help me he would, ”Rins said when asked if team assignments had been discussed.

“I really appreciate that, because in the end he’s a rival: he wants to beat me, I want to beat him.

“Of course I’ll thank him if he helps me, but if it’s not possible, thanks to all of his work this year.

“It was super fast, I also tried to be fast.

“The first guy you want to beat is your teammate, so I sure would look at him in the bad moments and say, ‘Wow, Joan does a good job so I have to do it too’.”

Rins’ first half of the season was plagued by the aftermath of a severe shoulder injury that excluded him from the Spanish GP, but since then he has had three podiums and one win in Aragon.
