While all eyes were on Marc Márquez on his return to Portimão, Portugal in early April 2021, Pramac Ducati racing driver Jorge Martin himself experienced a rather dramatic weekend. During FP3 practice, the MotoGP rookie suffered an extremely bad crash at Turn 7. Unsurprisingly, he didn’t start the race in Portimão and was instead taken straight to the hospital.
On April 21, 2021, Martin was operated on in the Traumatology Department (ICATME) of the Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona. Dr. Xavier Mir, Dr. David Campillo and Dr. Joan Carles Monllau were all part of Martin’s surgical team.
The operation is described as “extensive” as Martin suffered multiple fractures on his right and left sides. Some of these fractures required surgery, while others could be immobilized in order to heal without surgery. The current plan is for Martin to stay under observation in the hospital for a few days before starting rehabilitation. Both he and his team hope to prepare him for the Italian MotoGP race in Mugello, which is currently taking place on the weekend of March 30th
Two MotoGP races between Portugal and Mugello are planned for April 23rd: the Spanish Grand Prix in Jerez on May 2nd and the French GP in Le Mans on May 16th. Martin’s Pramac Ducati team, 2014 Moto2 champion Tito, is currently planning. to welcome Rabat is supposed to represent Martin at the Jerez GP. Rabat will make his World Superbike debut with Team Barni Racing at the season opener of the series on May 21. Since the scheduling worked out, he is available for the injured Martin in Jerez.
