THE somewhat clumsy looking Ducati MotoGP bike may not be the prettiest thing to ever grace a racetrack, but as the factory and satellite riders prove, ugly can still be fast.

Jack Miller had a brilliant day in the saddle yesterday and set a new course record on the Losail circuit in Qatar with a time of 1 minute 53,183. The sympathetic Australian was followed by the new works Yamaha MotoGP rider Fabio Quartararo with a time of 1 minute 53,380 in unprecedented times. Both drivers fell below Marc Marquez’s previous best time of 1min 53,380.

It wasn’t just lap records that tumbled, because Pramac Ducati rider Johann Zarco also set a top speed record on the one-kilometer straight. Zarco managed an absolute top speed of 352.9 km / h, a nuance over 219 km / h. The speed of the Frenchman’s Ducati satellite is just below the absolute top speed record in MotoGP, currently held by Andrea Dovizioso at 221.6 MPH.
It’s also worth noting that Dovizioso’s record was set on the Mugello circuit in Italy, a track that is blessed with a 709m straight – Mugello’s start-finish is 1,140m, although there are differences in elevation.
