Zarco “is missing something” and takes his first MotoGP victory

The Ducati rider has taken four podiums so far in 2021 and all finished second, most recently at the Catalonia Grand Prix last weekend when he narrowly missed victory for KTM’s Miguel Oliveira.

After five years in his MotoGP career, Zarco is long overdue a win as he has come close on several occasions.

Zarco – now 14 points behind the championship leader – is convinced that the win will come in time, but admits that the most important thing for him is to continue to score strong points against championship leaders Fabio Quartararo.

“For me [it] It would be nice to win, but second place is clear, 20 points are always incredible for me, “he said.

“So I’m not worried about the win and I’m not putting too much pressure on myself because I think it can come when everything is even better under control.

“But I still grow up riding my bike and it’s a nice feeling.

“I feel that the Ducati has huge potential. I try to do my best to use it better and better every time, and if all situations are under control, I might get the win.”

When asked by Motorsport.com if his approach was inspired by Joan Mir’s 2020 title-winning season, Zarco added, “Last year’s Joan Mir is a great example of this type of strategy, but that’s not the strategy it is we have at the beginning of the weekend.

“We really tried to do our best to win but I still see something is missing.

“Like here, let’s say maybe half a lap more or one more lap that I could win, but 24 laps was enough for all of us.

“I just had to be a little faster at the beginning, which I didn’t. So if that can give me the edge at the end of the year, I’ll be the first to be happy.

“But of course we have to be careful with Fabio, he was so quick this weekend and without this problem I think that maybe he was waiting behind Miguel to attack him, but he got the problem.

“So we got the advantage. So the most important thing is to get more points than the win at the moment.”
