Yamaha will not allow Maverick Vinales to compete in the UK MotoGP

Vinales was banned by Yamaha after the Styrian GP where he tried to deliberately damage the engine of his motorcycle on the final laps.

Yamaha announced on the eve of the Austrian GP last weekend that Vinales had been suspended and withdrawn from the second Red Bull Ring race.

Vinales publicly apologized to Yamaha on Saturday in Austria, admitting that his actions at the Styrian GP were fueled by frustration with his situation during the race and within Yamaha in general.

The relationship between the two parties collapsed irreparably during the 2021 season, with Vinales requesting the termination of his two-year contract at the end of the current season.

Last Monday, Aprilia confirmed that they had signed Vinales for the 2022 season.

Yamaha said last week that any decision on whether Vinales will compete in more races this year is up for discussion.

“At the moment anything is possible,” Yamaha team manager Massimo Meregalli told BT Sport last weekend about the possibility of Vinales racing again.

“The decision [to suspend him] was done here, it was done by us [in Europe]. We had a few talks with Japan but the first step was suspension in the face of this race.

“Then we’ll see what happens.”

Motorsport.com can now confirm that Vinales will not compete in the British GP. Yamaha test driver Cal Crutchlow will take over the second factory M1 alongside Fabio Quartararo for his home race.

Crutchlow, who retired in late 2020, represented the injured Franco Morbidelli at Petronas SRT for the Austrian double headed ball and was scheduled to do the same at Silverstone.

His place at SRT for the British GP will be taken over by SRT Moto2 rider Jake Dixon, who will make his MotoGP debut in front of a home crowd.

SRT will use the UK GP outing to evaluate Dixon as one of its options for the 2022 season has gotten complicated over the past few weeks.

Last Sunday, Petronas announced that it will end its title sponsorship of SRT for 2022, while Yamaha will only supply it with ‘B Spec’ machines next year.

With limited options, SRT appears to be promoting Darryn Binder straight from Moto3 to MotoGP next year, with the South African testing a Yamaha Superbike in Brno on Tuesday.

At this point in time, it is unclear whether Vinales’ suspension will only be extended to Silverstone or whether his days at Yamaha have come to an early end.
