Lecuona dominated the rain-hit FP2 ahead of Zarco

A heavy thunderstorm at the end of the Moto3 session left the Red Bull Ring soaked at the start of the second MotoGP practice session of the Austrian GP weekend.

Lecuona was first on the track under the conditions, followed by KTM works colleague Brad Binder and Tech 3 teammate Danilo Petrucci.

Lecuona added the top of the time tables for the first 10 minutes of the 45-minute training and continuously lowered the benchmark to 1: 33.892 minutes.

Ducati’s Jack Miller – who won the French flag-to-flag GP in wet conditions earlier this year – took over shortly after with 1: 33.372 minutes before Lecuona was back in front with 1: 33.218 minutes.

Over the next 10 minutes, the Miller, Lecuona and Honda duo Pol Espargaro and Marc Marquez switched to the top of the timesheet when the track began to dry up quickly.

With just over 20 minutes remaining, Marquez was the fastest with 1: 32.679 minutes and improved over the following tours to 1: 32.312 minutes and then to 1: 32.278 minutes.

When the last six minutes of the session showed signs of clear dryness on the track, Lecuona was again the first to test the conditions by switching to slicks.

The Tech 3 rider comfortably took the top spot from Marquez with a time of 1: 30.490 minutes, while Ducatis Miller was next to get slicks.

Lecuona improved to 1: 29.574 minutes and extended his lead at the top of the table to 1.779 seconds.

When the checkered flag ended the session, Lecuona shot in a final attempt of 1: 27.520 minutes to finish FP2 the fastest with a comfortable lead.

Zarco – who led FP1 and will remain the fastest in the combined time on Friday thanks to his lap record of 1: 22.827 minutes – stayed on wet tires until the end of FP2 and was Lecuona’s next challenger, albeit more than three seconds behind.

Aleix Espargaro completed the top three on his Aprilia ahead of Marc Marquez and Miller, while LCR Honda’s Alex Marquez was sixth fastest.

Pol Espargaro’s second factory Honda finished eighth behind Suzuki’s Alex Rins and ahead of championship leader Fabio Quartararo on the factory Yamaha and the factory KTM from Binder.

The Styrian GP winner Jorge Martin finished 11th, while LCR’s Takaaki Nakagami was the last officially rated driver within the 107% time of Lecuona – that was how big the Tech 3 driver’s lead on slick tires was in the end.

Since there was nothing to win in FP2, Suzuki’s Joan Mir was on the second Tech 3 motorcycle in front of rain specialist Danilo Petrucci in penultimate place.
