In an unreal MotoGP Q2 at the Monster Energy Czech Republic Grand Prix, Johann Zarco (Esponsorama Racing) took pole position for the first time since the 2018 Malaysia GP. Championship leader Fabio Quartararo (Petronas Yamaha SRT) finished second after falling on his final flying lap, while team-mate Franco Morbidelli completed the podium on Saturday. A good day for Ducati, but not for Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati Team) and Jack Miller (Pramac Racing), because the duo did not make it from Q1 and started from P18 and P14 respectively.

In the first laps of the second qualifying, Maverick Viñales (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP) crossed the finish line in 1: 56.6. Team-mate Valentino Rossi was also pretty much on par with the Spaniard’s time to place in P2 ahead of Morbidelli. Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) then raced past with a 1: 56.1 on provisional P1, but didn’t stay up for long when Quartararo drove the first 1:55 of the weekend – a 1: 55.990.

Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) was right behind the championship leader. Quartararo was on a fast lap but no faster than his first, but Aleix Espargaro took a provisional P2.

Aleix Espargaro gave Aprilia her best MotoGP qualifying of all time in fourth. Viñales had to settle for P5 after struggling with some problems that prevented him from returning in time for the final flying lap. This could be P6 if Espargaro’s lap time was not canceled. Team-mate Binder will start on P7, will benefit from the canceled lap time of Takaaki Nakagami (LCR Honda Idemitdu) and lead Danilo Petrucci (Ducati Team) on P8 and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) on P9.

Rossi showed signs of making it into the front row in practice, but has to be content with P1 alongside Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) and Cal Crutchlow (LCR Honda Castrol). Rins and Crutchlow both ride Jerez injuries so a P11 and P12 are more of a heroic feat.
