Pecco Bagnaia held Ducati’s perfect Friday record this year by taking the lead at the end of the second free practice session with one last breath that successfully ousted Alex Rins from the front.
The Italian, currently second in the overall standings behind Fabio Quartararo, is one of the favorites to win on a Mugello circuit for his home game, although he has not yet managed the feat in his career.
However, with Ducati enjoying a strong start to the season, it is expected to be the bike to beat this weekend on a track that has been kind to its top-speed superior Desmosedici over the years.

Up until the last moments of the session, it seemed like Rins was on track to end the day with a significant boost for the Suzuki rider, who after a third crash in five races last time out at Le. currently on the backlog was man.
Nonetheless, his confidence will have increased with a best time of less than a tenth behind Bagnaia’s benchmark (1: 46.147 minutes).
In third position, Franco Morbidelli led the Yamaha attacks, despite losing a lot of time in a straight line, aboard a 2019 base spec Yamaha M1 that outdoes its rivals at around 20 km / h.
Even so, Morbidelli was cornering fast enough to overtake factory colleague and championship leader Fabio Quartararo, who might have been fastest if his last lap hadn’t been spoiled by the motorbikes around him, a frustration he demonstrated in an animated way when he gives up his efforts.
On a track that doesn’t necessarily fit into the KTM package, Brad Binder led his works teammate Miguel Oliveira – another rider suffering from a bleak start to his MotoGP season in 2021 – in fifth and sixth, the latter on the timesheet for the majority led the FP2.
Takaaki Nakagami was again Honda’s best in seventh place, ahead of Maverick Vinales, who had to rely on his FP1 time to secure his provisional Q2 spot after running away in the final stages of FP2.
Since all six manufacturers crack the top ten, which guarantees them a place in Q2 for the time being, Aleix Espargaro is ninth for Aprilia, while Jack Miller rounds them off in tenth place.
Elsewhere, reigning champion Joan Mir had a restrained day in 12th place, just ahead of Marc Marquez, who, while faster than Repsol Honda teammate Pol Espargaro, might shy away from doing it in the unfamiliar second half of the timesheet to find again.
Luca Marini was the fastest of the Avintia rookies, making his debut at the home Grand Prix this weekend in 17th place, while Enea Bastianini was 19th.
Valentino Rossi, meanwhile, had a hot afternoon behind him and ran off the track twice to find himself in 21st place, 1.4 seconds ahead of Petronas SRT Yamaha team-mate Franco Morbidelli.
