Yamaha confirms Dovizioso’s MotoGP return at Misano

Dovizioso has been linked with a return to MotoGP with SRT in recent weeks after Maverick Vinales was ousted from the Yamaha factory team.

As expected, Morbidelli – who is currently driving for SRT – will be promoted to the works team this year ahead of a full-time campaign in 2022.

Speaking to BT Sport at the British Grand Prix on Sunday, Jarvis says Morbidelli will likely make his Yamaha factory debut at Misano next month once he’s fit again after knee surgery in June.

And Morbidelli’s place at the Misano SRT will be taken by 15-time MotoGP race winner Dovizioso.

Although the contract has not yet been signed, Jarvis sees no obstacles preventing this from happening. Dovizioso will lead the team formed from SRT next year after announcing that it will be all MotoGP by the end of 2021.

“The opportunity for Franky is to move up,” said Jarvis. “Obviously Franky has been on our radar for a while and this is now his third year, albeit a difficult one.

“But this opportunity gives him the upgrade early to join the works team.

“We have a clear plan with his management that he can do that, so he will be a works driver in 2022.

“And against this background and with this strange situation this year, we will be upgrading him this season as well. When Franky comes back, he should be in the works team.”

When asked if Dovizioso would lead the SRT in 2022, Jarvis added, “Yeah, pretty much.

“We arranged to meet Andrea and his management here this weekend.

“It’s not signed yet, but I don’t really think there are any obstacles to making it happen.

“So what we’re working on now is that Andrea will go back to Misano and then ride Franky’s bike this season and then run a full season next year.”
