Brad Binder finished sixth on a bright but cool track at Silverstone for the British Grand Prix and the twelfth round of MotoGP 2021. The result on Sunday now means that he is sixth in the MotoGP standings with 108 points in the bag.

After the one-two at the Red Bull Ring, MotoGP switched to the second-fastest track on the calendar and the longest layout. Silverstone’s eighteen corners and a length of almost 6 km offered both the riders and the bike setup a technical test and the choice between medium and hard compounds. Bright, but windy and cool summer conditions made for a stable environment from Friday, and the 20-lap MotoGP race was driven on dry and grippy asphalt.

Brad Binder was the most advanced RC16 driver on the grid, starting from the 12th and fourth rows. The South African got off to a slow start, picked up speed quickly and was on the edge of the top ten. From this position, Binder became faster and more determined with his overtaking maneuvers, eventually working his way up to sixth place when the series returned to the UK for the first time since summer 2019.

All-round positive results

Tech3 KTM Factory Racing drivers Iker Lecuona and Danilo Petrucci were also proactive. The Spaniard clung to Binder’s exhaust fumes and followed his brand colleague to seventh place for his second-best result of the season and his second-highest result in almost two years in MotoGP. Petrucci made his way back to 10th place with the RC16 and his third top ten position so far.

Miguel Oliveira was plagued by problems with rear wheel grip and finished a position outside of the points on 16th. The Gran Premio Tissot de Aragón leads MotoGP to the 13th round in two weeks in the Spanish realm and on the MotorLand Aragon circuit.

Brad Binder: “Today was a solid day, all in all. I had a difficult start to the race and struggled a lot on the first few laps, but as the race went on, I got stronger and stronger. I’m very happy with the rhythm and held it through to the end. I would like to thank the team, this weekend was not easy for us and the guys worked non-stop. We tried everything and the best bike we’ve had the whole weekend is the bike we had the race for. “

Mike Leitner, Red Bull KTM Race Manager: “In general we are quite happy with the result. It was difficult for us to find the right set-up for this track from Friday. Silverstone is one of those tracks that we haven’t done that many laps with our race. In five years, MotoGP missed two races here, but Brad and Iker did a great job today and overtook a lot of drivers. Danilo has also made great strides forward. We tried to help Miguel with the setup but he was having problems with the rear grip. We’ll go to Aragon, hoping to get off to a better start. “
