British MotoGP: Quartararo: “Silverstone a track I really love” | MotoGP

After Fabio Quartararo had increased his lead in the MotoGP title from 34 to 47 points during the successive events in Austria, probably the toughest track on the calendar, he went to Silverstone, a track that I really love.

Due to the Covid pandemic, the British venue has not been on the MotoGP calendar since 2019, when Quartararo qualified as a rookie Petronas Yamaha rider in a strong fourth place.

On this occasion, his race ended in the first corner when he got spectacularly tangled with Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso. The Frenchman will now try to overcome the distance to take an eighth podium and a fifth win of the season.

Should Quartararo be on the top step on Sunday, it would bring him two wins over his opponents, six laps to go.

“I’m going into the British GP with a very positive mood. We have extended our championship lead after Spielberg and Silverstone is a track that I really love,” said Quartararo.

“We took a big step there in terms of performance in 2019. I think this race will be a good race in good conditions. If it rains we have to see, but in any case we will be our best.

“My goal is to fight for victory, firstly because this is one of my favorite tracks and secondly because it is an important GP for the team,” he added, referring to Monster Energy as the event’s title sponsor.

Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) and reigning champion Joan Mir (Suzuki) are now Quartararo’s closest title rivals, but both have yet to win another race in 2021.

Cal Crutchlow will ride alongside Quartararo at Monster Yamaha instead of Maverick Vinales this weekend.
