What a MotoGP legend learned from the Manchester City boss

Honda rider Marc Marquez and his brother Alex Marquez visited the Premier League club Manchester City ahead of the British Grand Prix this weekend at Silverstone.

Aside from the usual photo opportunity, Marquez announced that he had been invited for a two-hour lunch by City Manager Guardiola.

Marquez says he learned a lot from Guardiola about how to approach his life in sports.

“Yes, of course we had a really nice chat with Pep and I want to thank Manchester City, but especially Pep Guardiola’s group because it was a nice chat,” said Marquez on Thursday at Silverstone.

“But then they invited me to lunch, which wasn’t planned, and we talked for almost two hours because it was a friendly conversation and I feel good.

“When both are comfortable, everything is easier.

“We talk about a lot of things but it was really nice because you can learn a lot from Pep and one of the things was the mental side, how to approach situations, how to survive in the sports world, because he told me – and it is that correct – “it’s always the present, people always forget what you did in the past and it doesn’t matter what you did in the past when you are in the present”.

“And in the present you have to show everything and it’s important to understand this mental side.

“When you retire you can think about the past, but when you ride you have to think about the present in the moment, and that’s exactly what we’re doing now.”

The British GP this weekend is the first since the COVID-19 pandemic began, with a sold out Silverstone that will greet a full audience.

Marquez comes into the Silverstone lap 11th overall after slipping late at the last Austrian GP, where he finished 15th.
