Marc Marquez’s diplopia returned after he fell during the warm-up at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
The Honda rider had been declared unfit to race in Mandalika after a high-side at Turn 7 during the warm-up before the race. The MotoGP medical staff confirmed that Marquez had suffered a concussion and several minor traumas before being transferred to the hospital in Mataram, the capital of the island of Lombok, where he underwent additional check-ups and a CT scan that had ruled out serious injuries. As a precaution, the MotoGP medical staff and the Repsol Honda Team had jointly decided that Marc Marquez would not take part in the Indonesian race.
During his return trip to Spain, Marc Marquez began to feel discomfort in his eyes and, once he arrived in Barcelona on Monday, he had an emergency visit with his trusted eye doctor, Dr. Sánchez Dalmau, at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. After an eye exam, the doctor confirmed a relapse of Marc’s diplopia, which he began to suffer from last November.
This morning, Marc was visited by the medical staff, led by Dr. Samuel Antuña, at the Ruber Internacional Hospital in Madrid, where he underwent a general medical check-up to assess all the bruises caused by the accident and also a brain MRI. This reconfirmed that he had no further injuries.
Ophthalmologist Sánchez Dalmau explained: “The neuro-ophthalmological assessment performed on Marc Marquez on Monday after the head trauma he suffered during the Indonesian Grand Prix shows a new episode of diplopia caused by a recurrence of the paralysis of the fourth right nerve, with a lesser involvement than what had occurred in November 2021. After this exam, we initially decided to follow a conservative treatment with periodic medical tests. Next week, Marc Márquez will undergo another check-up to assess the evolution of the accident and predict the estimated recovery period, to be able to return to the competition.”
Marc Marquez wrote on his social media profiles: “I feel like I’m experiencing a déjà vu … During my return trip to Spain, I started having problems with my eyesight, and I decided to have a visit with Dr. Sanchez Dalmau, who confirmed a new episode of diplopia. Fortunately, it’s less serious than last year’s injury, but now it’s time to start again and wait to see how it’ll evolve.”
