Proving to be more dominant than any other manufacturer, Ducati’s impressive start to 2022 continued in Mugello as Francesco Bagnaia won his second race of the season.

The Bologna bullets have combined for five of the eight race wins so far in 2022, with Enea Bastianini securing three of those.

However, the Italian’s championship challenge was once again impacted by another crash as he slid out of last weekend’s Grand Prix with just a few laps remaining.

Despite it looking like a weekend where reigning world champion Fabio Quartararo lacked the pace for a podium result, the factory Yamaha rider showed just why he leads the world championship as he got the better of main title rival Aleix Espargaro for second.

Although Misano is his true home race, Bagnaia called winning the Italian MotoGP at Mugello a ‘dream’.

“This is something I dreamed of,” claimed the factory Ducati rider. “For sure, Misano is my home Grand Prix but this one is the Italian Grand Prix, it’s incredible to win here. It’s one of the toughest tracks ever.”

Making it even more special for Bagnaia was the fact he had the pace to win at Mugello in 2021 before crashing out of the lead.

While Ducati might be the quickest bike on the grid, and riders performing at their best aboard it, Quartararo is perhaps the favorite heading into the weekend given his record at Montmelo.

A winner in Moto2, Quartararo claimed his first MotoGP podium at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (2019), before taking his third premier class win at the same venue in 2020.

Quartararo was in with a chance of winning last year’s Grand Prix before the famous ‘leather-gate’ moment began – the Frenchman’s leather suit came undone as he lost his chest protector, resulting in the Frenchman having to finish the race with his chest unprotected.

Speaking ahead of the Catalan round, Quartararo said: “Catalunya is a track that I really like. Last year we were really fast but I had my leathers open. We will make sure to keep it really closed [laughs].

“We will try to be as fast as last year because the pace was really strong. I feel like I arrive with a lot of confidence.”

Marc Marquez will be absent from this weekend’s race after electing to step back from MotoGP and have a fourth right arm operation.
