Massimo Meregalli furious with penalty: ‘Maybe it would be better to stay at home, or come here and play cards’

Franco Morbidelli was at the center of a controversy at the Malaysian GP, because on the last lap, at turn 14 of the Sepang circuit, in a direct fight with Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia) he touched his rival and the stewards considered that it was reason to penalize him by three seconds on the final time. Something that Monster Energy Yamaha Team Director Massimo Meregalli strongly disagrees with.

Speaking to the Sky Sport MotoGP microphones, and quoted by GPOne, the Italian official made it clear that he was “fired up” about the sanction as he disagreed with it: ‘I was angered by the penalty they gave him, because in my opinion it doesn’t exist. Aleix left the door open and Morbido slipped through. In my opinion, it’s not correct. I don’t accept it.’

Meregalli recalled the difficulties the Yamaha has with overtaking on the straight, admitting that it is not worth competing if there is to fear a penalty with corner overtaking maneuvers at the limit:

– It’s impossible for us to overtake on the straight and, if we can’t overtake a little bit on the limit on the last lap, if we can’t pass in the corners because we have to be afraid that they will give us a penalty, then maybe it would be better to stay at home, or come here and play cards.
