Quartararo wants “less emotions” in the MotoGP approach 2021

The incoming Yamaha factory rider won three times for Petronas SRT in 2020, but his title challenge collapsed after a disastrous series of races from the French Grand Prix to the final in Portugal where he failed to make the top 6.

Quartararo, who had led much of the season, finished the year eighth overall and 44 points behind world champion Joan Mir. During the final laps, Quartararo seemed visibly frustrated on the bike and in the garage as he struggled aboard his 2020-M1.

He believes it will be “very important” to iron this out before his factory Yamaha team step as he can give his crew much clearer feedback on the bike’s issues than he was able to in 2020.

“I want to work on the emotional part, on the bike, in the box and out of the box, just to have fewer emotions,” said Quartararo. “I think it will be very important for the next year. To give better comments to my crew chief and engineers, when emotions are high, just say the bike is not working and you don’t know exactly which part.

“I think this will be very important, but right now I feel like I have to work on it.”

Quartararo says he had already started to work quieter for the rest of the Portugal weekend and has been working with a psychologist since the end of the season.

Quartararo has previously admitted as much after describing the lowest point in his career earlier this year after the 2018 Moto2 round in Argentina and again after his MotoGP debut in Qatar last year when he had to start out of the pit lane when his Yamaha blocked after qualifying fifth.

“On the emotions side, I’m already starting to work more calmly and with fewer emotions than possible,” he said on the Portugal weekend. “But of course I plan to see a psychologist. I’ve been going a few times, but I will go more often because I think small differences can make big changes.

“So I’ll go with the psychologist again and work on this part because it’s so important for me to touch small details with the team.”
