MotoGP, Brno GP 2021 cancelled, Czech Republic does not race

In 2021 we will not see the Czech Grand Prix in Brno. The local organizer announced it yesterday and the cause is the lack of funds needed to organize next year’s race.

In fact, all of the riders were demanding a complete overhaul of the tarmac – a job done 12 years ago – and Dorna had championed their cause. The problem is, that 3.8 million euros would be necessary, and at the moment there is no one who can bear these costs, Not even the City of Brno and the Government of Moravia, who have always been the main sponsors of the event but are now cornered by the coronavirus emergency.

make it worse For 2021, the Dorna had decided to increase the amount required to organize the GP from 4 to 6 million euros, putting the organizers in an even bigger crisis.

Brno had officially debuted in the World Cup in 1965. The circuit was completely resurfaced in the 1980s (before it was a road circuit) and has been on the calendar continuously since 1987, with the only exception of 1992, the year Slovakia was partitioned.

The date left open by Brno could be made up for in one of the reserve circles. One is Portimao, the other is Igora Drive in Russia. The latter might be a particularly valid alternative, because the circuit is close to the borders of Finland, so there could be a double date in Northern Europe in July.
